Golf Performance Cycle Creates Mindset of Improvement

My Name

Matt Cuccaro, Director of Mental Training at Hank Haney IJGA

My Experience

Since joining Hank Haney IJGA in 2006, Matt has trained numerous American Junior Golf Association Junior All-Americans, IJGT champions, as well as PGA, LPGA, and Champions Tour players from around the world. He received his Master of Education in Counseling/Sport Psychology from Boston University

How my tip will help:

At Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy on Hilton Head Island, our student-athletes, ages 10-19, reach their potential on and off the golf course by creating a mindset of continuous improvement. We call this the Performance Cycle. Below is insight into how this is achieved each day.

Here's my tip:

Prepare Stage of Golf Performance Cycle
The "prepare stage" of the performance cycle is the longest in duration for all athletes. This includes the days, weeks, and months set aside for training between competitions. This is an opportunity for players to develop the technical, tactical, physical, and mental skills required to compete at a high level. The performance cycle typically starts with a high percentage of instruction in order for the athlete to learn new skills and improve technique. As the cycle continues, the athlete engages in quality repetition of movement to create the feel and trust required to compete without excess technical thought as competition nears.

Compete Stage of Golf Performance Cycle
The "compete stage" is the time to execute and showcase the skills developed and improved during the prepare stage. It is not ideal to try something new or uncomfortable in a tournament. Competition is naturally a time of higher stress, so an athlete's mind and body will automatically revert to doing what it knows best. The compete stage is the opportunity for an athlete to measure his or her current potential and show how well they can manage the physical, tactical, and mental aspects of performance in a public forum.

Evaluate and Active Rest Stage
The "evaluate and active rest stage" is often skimmed over or eliminated altogether because it may not show immediate results. However, if the athlete does not have an opportunity to assess himself and take time for other off-course needs, long-term development suffers. Success in life is a continuous process of evaluating, learning, and developing; which takes a significant amount of time and energy. Without proper evaluation and rest, athletes typically lose perspective on their sport and life as a whole, resulting in burnout and shorter, less fulfilling athletic careers.

Sports For Active People

In our world today there has never been a better time for Sports Active People. There are so many individual sports, team sports and sports with a wide variety of challenging disciplines and special focus.
The benefits for sports active people are numerous. With the right balance in physical exercise you will potentially lead a better, more fitter, healthier Lifestyle. Many people are very focused on exactly which Sport they are most passionate about and know precisely where their personal commitment lies. There are other people who are initially unsure and in most cases usually find a sport that appeals specifically to them. Some people just like to participate in any given sport for the exercise and the opportunity to meet other people.
There are equally many people who are 'sports minded' and who are looking for ideas for which Sport to indulge in. Unusual Sports suggestions are welcome to help people looking for fresh ideas. With so many Sports to choose from - you can consider Physical Active Sports, Less Active Physical Sports, and Sports for fun, Emerging Sports and so many other different categories.
For active people sports help with increased focus in Business and in life generally. You will often benefit from 'your will to win' and the increased motivation you sometimes get from a given situation. Certain sports will help and enable you to improve your communication skills, team building skills and life skills. You could well build a better team ethic in business based on your sports training regime.
Sports for active people build a competitive edge in your nature and 'natural ability'. The 'will to win' and compete at different levels becomes more apparent in many of the things that you do. Various sports ultimately help people to demonstrate true Leadership skills.
Active participation in a Sport or different sports is usually the hallmark of a healthy Lifestyle. Age should not be a defining factor in your sports involvement either. People of all ages actively engage in a wide variety of activities.
Being actively involved in sport can actually help you to be more successful in Business as you are more likely to develop a winner's edge. It's not necessarily about winning but it is the wanting to win and compete that counts more. Only 1 person or 1 team can win so it is important to be a good looser. However on the basis that you can win more than you loose then it is more likely to have a positive affect on your 'self esteem'.
Potentially by your active involvement in sports you are more mentally alert, more balanced weight wise and more in harmony with your body. Endeavor to keep a good balance though and not over indulge which could easily mean serious injury to you.
Respect your body, mind and soul and you will achieve a great deal more.
In conclusion be actively involved just choose the right sport for you.

Baseball Memorabilia and Sports Collectibles

When you think of baseball memorabilia and sports collectibles, do you think of baseball cards or do you think of the signed jerseys, the throwback jerseys, jackets, hats, helmets, the pictures, and hero posters? Well, there are many ways to show your support by collecting items of your favorite team or player.
People collect for other sports as well, such as baseball, NASCAR, basketball, football, golf. Some items that are found to be fun to collect are die cast models, Bobble Heads, Hero Posters and the newest items are The Fat Heads items. These are life-like, life-sized replicas of sports heroes that can be safely stuck to your wall. With all of the things you can collect, it is no wonder that some are confused as to where to start or how to start collecting sports memorabilia and sports collectibles. Collecting any sports memorabilia or sports collectibles is a very personal hobby that has value based more on the individuals likes and passions as much as the success of the individual player or team.
For those of us who want to buy that special someone something unique related to their favorite NASCAR driver, basketball, baseball, football or golf player, team, or sport, what do you look for? If they are into baseball memorabilia, you might want to consider the St Louis Cardinals. They not only won the World Series in 2006 but they also have some of the all time greats like Alber Pujols, Scott Rolen, and Yadier Molina. On the other hand, maybe they are into NASCAR. Then you have Dale Earnhardt Jr., Tony Stewart, and the reigning champion Jimmy Johnson. Maybe your sports fanatic is a woman. Well, she may like Danica Patrick who has taken Indy Racing Leagues by storm. We cannot forget the late and great Dale Earnhardt Sr. whose collectibles have not only doubled but tripled since his death and seem to be growing in value even more each year. As with many great painters like Picasso, Earnhardt fans refuse to allow his dream and legacy to die.
When it comes to NASCAR, you might want to not only look into the cars, but Plush Bears designed after the driver, year books and autobiographies, key chains and lighters, plates, glasses, clocks and more for your home. You will even find out that baseball memorabilia and sports collectibles have spread into the Christmas decorations with entire villages and decorations for the tree to the roof of your sports fan's home.
However, there are other great sports stars as well, including sports greats like Ben Roethlisberger, Shaquille O'Neil, and Nomar Garciaparra. Moreover, let us not forget the ever-resounding Michael Jordan. When throwback jerseys were mentioned, you may or may not have realized how much these have influenced sports memorabilia, but in 1980, when the NBA, MLB, and NFL began selling both new and the ones used in games, it pushed the collectors to wanting even more.
The die cast scene has changed as well. Fire trucks were a hot item at one time, but they have revolved back to the older muscle cars and the newer hotrod collectibles. Then we have the over all baseball memorabilia and sports collectors who grab anything from a picture of Tiger Woods to Los Angeles Lakers for basketball, or the Indianapolis Colts, the NFL Super Bowl Champions. Even the seven-time champion of the Tour de France, Lance Armstrong, has a strong following for memorabilia and sports collectibles.
When it comes to the value of the items you collect, remember that the more famous the star, the more expensive the baseball memorabilia and sports collectible items will be. If the item can be verified as authentic in some way, that really adds to the value. Make sure you keep any items related to your sports collectible or sports memorabilia. These would include the original box, any correspondence or signatures, receipts, etc. These will all help to make the item more valuable and collectible.

Students and Sports

Sports is an indispensable part of education system all over the world at each level of studies. Whereas education kindles the light of knowledge in the mind, the sports help to maintain the physique. It is always true that a healthy mind can only be the best in education. At the same time, sports are also important means of entertainment after long hours of studies and a source of renewed energy. Not only outdoor games like chess, table - tennis and billiards also require player's full attention and concentration accompanied by specific skills and techniques. All this is helpful from the point of view of health of students.
Students are always full of energy, all of which cannot be spent in studies only. It is sports only which are an outlet of surplus energy. Otherwise the extra energy can lead students to do wrong or unwanted activities which are harmful not only for the health but studies of students as well. The students enjoy their leisure time more while playing sports. They run and jump a lot which improve their digestive system. Their lungs breathe fresh air which make the students more active and healthy. Sports loosen the limbs and relax the entire body system of students so that they are again well - prepared to study with more concentration and dedication. Sports provide food for mind in the same way as learning provides knowledge.
Sports are essential to develop a healthy and constructive attitude towards life. In fact, sports lend a rhythm to life of students and provides the best co - curricular activity for them. However, it is found that present system of education is confined to the four walls of class rooms of our schools and colleges. It does not provide a good and scientific education. The present system of education and examinations has turned the students into mere bookworms. The students do not get time to pay any attention towards their physique. Though a well balanced diet can provide all the nourishing constituents in right proportions to body of students, but sports are essential to develop a well balanced personality. A combination of sports and studies for students will, therefore, result in their intellectual, moral and physical development.
Parents, and teachers both should encourage students to take keen interest in sports and should not insist on their being lost in their books. The school and college authorities should also provide the basic facilities to students for developing their interest in various games. And it is truly said "All work and no play makes Jack a dully boy". The Governments must ensure sufficient funds to institutions for establishing necessary infrastructure in their schools and colleges for sports. Rather special schools should be started in each city where students can start their careers as sportsman along with studies to achieve minimum qualification.
In this way, sport persons of international level can definitely be developed and groomed in our country. There is no dearth of talent in students. It is a matter to bring it out by providing the required incentives. The participation in sports will make our future citizens disciplined, obedient, co - operative and having high team - spirits in all spheres of life. A student learns that while playing, he has to play not for his own good but for the good and success of whole team. Eventually he is to keep in mind the success of his school or college or university along with laurels to his state or country. Sports make him lead a corporate life.
Sports teach our students that tears and smiles, sobs and sniffles, joys and laughter all are the inevitable accomplishments of life and should be taken in the stride in right earnest. Sports teach them that it is courage and fortitude to face the trials, hardships and various rigours of daily life. The very breath of sportsmanship is fairplay. Students learn to do no hanky panky, no underhand dealings and not shufflings. Sports is another name of honesty, integrity and loyality for students. Thus only a good sportsman can be the ideal citizen of the country. A student with good sportsman can be the ideal citizen of the country. A student with good sportsmanship can be right person to lead the nation. The country would get free from the maladies of corruption, hatred and greed if our politicians are able to possess even a fraction f virtues of a good sportsman.
Students also get lot other advantages if they love to play sports with dedication. They get admission in professional institutions for higher studies and are also preferred by many big industries for jobs. They are respected everywhere. They get more opportunities to travel not only within their own country but abroad also and above all, at no expenses to their account. They happen to meet hundreds of new people and see other cultures. They develop a sense of national and international integrity and unity. Sports are best for students as long as kept away from any type of politics and misuse.
