Baseball Memorabilia and Sports Collectibles

When you think of baseball memorabilia and sports collectibles, do you think of baseball cards or do you think of the signed jerseys, the throwback jerseys, jackets, hats, helmets, the pictures, and hero posters? Well, there are many ways to show your support by collecting items of your favorite team or player.
People collect for other sports as well, such as baseball, NASCAR, basketball, football, golf. Some items that are found to be fun to collect are die cast models, Bobble Heads, Hero Posters and the newest items are The Fat Heads items. These are life-like, life-sized replicas of sports heroes that can be safely stuck to your wall. With all of the things you can collect, it is no wonder that some are confused as to where to start or how to start collecting sports memorabilia and sports collectibles. Collecting any sports memorabilia or sports collectibles is a very personal hobby that has value based more on the individuals likes and passions as much as the success of the individual player or team.
For those of us who want to buy that special someone something unique related to their favorite NASCAR driver, basketball, baseball, football or golf player, team, or sport, what do you look for? If they are into baseball memorabilia, you might want to consider the St Louis Cardinals. They not only won the World Series in 2006 but they also have some of the all time greats like Alber Pujols, Scott Rolen, and Yadier Molina. On the other hand, maybe they are into NASCAR. Then you have Dale Earnhardt Jr., Tony Stewart, and the reigning champion Jimmy Johnson. Maybe your sports fanatic is a woman. Well, she may like Danica Patrick who has taken Indy Racing Leagues by storm. We cannot forget the late and great Dale Earnhardt Sr. whose collectibles have not only doubled but tripled since his death and seem to be growing in value even more each year. As with many great painters like Picasso, Earnhardt fans refuse to allow his dream and legacy to die.
When it comes to NASCAR, you might want to not only look into the cars, but Plush Bears designed after the driver, year books and autobiographies, key chains and lighters, plates, glasses, clocks and more for your home. You will even find out that baseball memorabilia and sports collectibles have spread into the Christmas decorations with entire villages and decorations for the tree to the roof of your sports fan's home.
However, there are other great sports stars as well, including sports greats like Ben Roethlisberger, Shaquille O'Neil, and Nomar Garciaparra. Moreover, let us not forget the ever-resounding Michael Jordan. When throwback jerseys were mentioned, you may or may not have realized how much these have influenced sports memorabilia, but in 1980, when the NBA, MLB, and NFL began selling both new and the ones used in games, it pushed the collectors to wanting even more.
The die cast scene has changed as well. Fire trucks were a hot item at one time, but they have revolved back to the older muscle cars and the newer hotrod collectibles. Then we have the over all baseball memorabilia and sports collectors who grab anything from a picture of Tiger Woods to Los Angeles Lakers for basketball, or the Indianapolis Colts, the NFL Super Bowl Champions. Even the seven-time champion of the Tour de France, Lance Armstrong, has a strong following for memorabilia and sports collectibles.
When it comes to the value of the items you collect, remember that the more famous the star, the more expensive the baseball memorabilia and sports collectible items will be. If the item can be verified as authentic in some way, that really adds to the value. Make sure you keep any items related to your sports collectible or sports memorabilia. These would include the original box, any correspondence or signatures, receipts, etc. These will all help to make the item more valuable and collectible.

Students and Sports

Sports is an indispensable part of education system all over the world at each level of studies. Whereas education kindles the light of knowledge in the mind, the sports help to maintain the physique. It is always true that a healthy mind can only be the best in education. At the same time, sports are also important means of entertainment after long hours of studies and a source of renewed energy. Not only outdoor games like chess, table - tennis and billiards also require player's full attention and concentration accompanied by specific skills and techniques. All this is helpful from the point of view of health of students.
Students are always full of energy, all of which cannot be spent in studies only. It is sports only which are an outlet of surplus energy. Otherwise the extra energy can lead students to do wrong or unwanted activities which are harmful not only for the health but studies of students as well. The students enjoy their leisure time more while playing sports. They run and jump a lot which improve their digestive system. Their lungs breathe fresh air which make the students more active and healthy. Sports loosen the limbs and relax the entire body system of students so that they are again well - prepared to study with more concentration and dedication. Sports provide food for mind in the same way as learning provides knowledge.
Sports are essential to develop a healthy and constructive attitude towards life. In fact, sports lend a rhythm to life of students and provides the best co - curricular activity for them. However, it is found that present system of education is confined to the four walls of class rooms of our schools and colleges. It does not provide a good and scientific education. The present system of education and examinations has turned the students into mere bookworms. The students do not get time to pay any attention towards their physique. Though a well balanced diet can provide all the nourishing constituents in right proportions to body of students, but sports are essential to develop a well balanced personality. A combination of sports and studies for students will, therefore, result in their intellectual, moral and physical development.
Parents, and teachers both should encourage students to take keen interest in sports and should not insist on their being lost in their books. The school and college authorities should also provide the basic facilities to students for developing their interest in various games. And it is truly said "All work and no play makes Jack a dully boy". The Governments must ensure sufficient funds to institutions for establishing necessary infrastructure in their schools and colleges for sports. Rather special schools should be started in each city where students can start their careers as sportsman along with studies to achieve minimum qualification.
In this way, sport persons of international level can definitely be developed and groomed in our country. There is no dearth of talent in students. It is a matter to bring it out by providing the required incentives. The participation in sports will make our future citizens disciplined, obedient, co - operative and having high team - spirits in all spheres of life. A student learns that while playing, he has to play not for his own good but for the good and success of whole team. Eventually he is to keep in mind the success of his school or college or university along with laurels to his state or country. Sports make him lead a corporate life.
Sports teach our students that tears and smiles, sobs and sniffles, joys and laughter all are the inevitable accomplishments of life and should be taken in the stride in right earnest. Sports teach them that it is courage and fortitude to face the trials, hardships and various rigours of daily life. The very breath of sportsmanship is fairplay. Students learn to do no hanky panky, no underhand dealings and not shufflings. Sports is another name of honesty, integrity and loyality for students. Thus only a good sportsman can be the ideal citizen of the country. A student with good sportsman can be the ideal citizen of the country. A student with good sportsmanship can be right person to lead the nation. The country would get free from the maladies of corruption, hatred and greed if our politicians are able to possess even a fraction f virtues of a good sportsman.
Students also get lot other advantages if they love to play sports with dedication. They get admission in professional institutions for higher studies and are also preferred by many big industries for jobs. They are respected everywhere. They get more opportunities to travel not only within their own country but abroad also and above all, at no expenses to their account. They happen to meet hundreds of new people and see other cultures. They develop a sense of national and international integrity and unity. Sports are best for students as long as kept away from any type of politics and misuse.

Giving Children a Sporting Chance

Living in a Garbage Dump
"It was during a sponsored rugby union visit to Cambodia that I saw children living in squalor on the Stung Meanchey Municipal Waste Dump in Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh. Despite the terrible conditions these children were living in, they still had hope and happiness in their eyes," says Greening.
Greening was inspired to get involved when he saw the difference sports could make to them. Two boys who had grown up on the dump, and had then been given assistance from a volunteer, were now representing Cambodia on the national rugby team. He quickly realised his expertise could go a long way towards helping these children.
Greening says, "In most cases, sport is last on the list in terms of a charity's funding and objectives. Knowing that sports have excellent therapeutic value, I also believe that the ethics learnt on a sports field - responsibility, leadership, and teamwork - are transferable to any environment. We established this charity to provide an opportunity for children to gain some therapy through various sports, and gain self-confidence."
Kick a Ball
Thus came about the Sporting Chance Foundation to improve the lives of underprivileged children - whether they're inner city kids from London, or child prostitutes in Vietnam. As long as they want to kick a ball, the charity aims to always be there to kick it back. "Sporting Chance Foundation established itself by providing the necessities to make this transformation - food, shelter and clothing," Greening explains, "and we have endeavoured to provide each child with a set of characteristics that will last them a lifetime."
Jonny Wilkinson Steps Up
Calling upon high-profile friends, Greening gained support from sport and media personalities, including England rugby World Cup heroes Jonny Wilkinson and Jason Leonard, Joel Stransky, leading musician Heidi Range from the Sugababes, TV and radio presenter Dave Berry, and ESPN STAR Sports presenter Charlie Webster. Each has pledged to dedicate their time and expertise to ensure the charity reaches as many children as possible.
To maximise the impact of the Sporting Chance Foundation, Greening ensures that the charity works alongside existing non-government organisations (NGOs). The charity will help supply funding and sporting equipment to orphanages, and work directly with specific NGOs to improve the lives of the children in their programmes.
Greening says, "The charity presently works with three NGOs. Two are based in Phnom Penh and the third is an international charity, Touraid, based out of the UK. Touraid funds children from less developed countries to travel and play sport abroad. The alliance with Touraid gives children from Sporting Chance Foundation the opportunity to experience new regions of the world and learn about different cultures."
Down in the Dumps
Funding from Sporting Chance not only supports their own projects; if they see an NGO with a suitable cause, they will also help. On a recent trip to Phnom Penh, Sporting Chance Foundation met up with two other NGOs: Friends and the Sunrise orphanage. Both had shelters set up to help the city's street children. Friends, an inner city shelter, has been incredibly successful at taking boys and girls off the streets; however, the children had nowhere safe to run around. Sporting Chance Foundation proposed a sports hall and playground within the shelter's walls.
Sunrise, based just outside the city, has a small soccer field, but the girls at the shelter have no sporting outlet. Sporting Chance Foundation drew up plans to build a multi-purpose playing surface for the children to enjoy tennis, badminton, volleyball and netball. This is just the start of their work in Phnom Penh; they will continue to look for more worthwhile projects in the city.
Developing Coaches
Presently, the foundation uses outside help with its construction projects and coaching, but its aim is to make the charity 100 percent self-sufficient. Greening's goal is that children coached in his programmes will go on to be coaches for the next generation of young sportsmen and women.
Currently, Sporting Chance Foundation helps 2,000 children a day, ranging from infants with HIV to children orphaned by landmines, dysfunctional families or drug abuse. As funds increase, the charity hopes to sponsor children through the local public school. Ultimately it aims to establish its own centre in Phnom Penh near the school with dorms, a canteen, a sports field and sporting facilities.
Through Joel Stransky and Heidi Range, Sporting Chance Foundation is beginning to use the Cambodian template to help an orphanage in the townships of South Africa.
An All-Star Team
Through his contacts in the rugby world, Greening is also in the process of putting together an all-star rugby team to play in Dubai, Hong Kong and Bangkok to raise funds and increase overall awareness of the charity. Two young boys from Cambodia will be invited to join the team for the tour.
"The Foundation's aim is to ultimately help children in every corner of the world. As a charity that works to a 'non-compete' principle, Sporting Chance Foundation openly invites other charities to give a helping hand, resulting in a bigger impact towards helping those in need," concludes Greening.
Greening is currently living and working in Singapore with Standard Chartered Bank as Associate Director, Global Clients Relations & Entertainment for Wholesale Bank, along with continuing Standard Chartered's commitment to youth sport and especially Greening's sport of rugby.
