The Spirit Of Sport

The concept is as old as the hills. But, it’s also something that is new. As Jerry Lynch, a sports psychologist, and Chungliang Al Huang, a ta’i-chi master and expert calligrapher, explain in their “back-to-the-future” standard for sporting excellence, “Working Out, Working Within,” which is, in essence, a premise on how ancient Eastern philosophy can improve your game. They synthesise: “Working can be a spiritual act... Sport can be a spiritual act, an arena for the battles within, where your obedience to athletics and fitness cannot be separated from the search for life’s verities.”

You know that, don’t you -- that martial arts has always amalgamated philosophy with corporeal elements? But, for Lynch and Huang, this kind of exercise is not as important as to what’s going on in your mind when you go through the motions of each exercise.

Three Techniques

In reality, therefore, their programme encompasses three simple, but profound, techniques -- [all] based on the ancient Chinese philosophy of Taoism, or The Way, a parallel of prana, in Indian philosophy -- breathwatching, a mode of relaxation, or meditation, where you lay maximum emphasis on your breathing; visual recording, or relaxed visualisation; and, affirmation reciting.

Such a methodology, Lynch and Huang emphasise, is in no way extraordinary, or too formidable a technical rigmarole, but a self-explanatory journey -- a timeless philosophy that was propounded by Lao Tzu, nearly 2,500 years ago. “Tao,” write Lynch and Huang “is like water, the path of least resistance. [It] means the way of natural truth [that] encourages you to notice how nature works, and then act accordingly.” The duo claims that all of us could become better sportspersons/athletes only when we unite mind and heart through a host of virtues such as spontaneity, non-interference, and stillness in motion, or being. It’s all precisely cognate, they again relate, to a sort of calm, or tranquillity, in the eye of a storm. Of a “muster” that, in all likelihood, bestows us with a better acceptance of the Self, and the world around us.

Lynch and Huang do not just prescribe, or claim, that their idea is a panacea to winning gold medals at national/international levels, or scoring runs at will. They recognise that Tao sports won’t make you the next Carl Lewis or Roger Federer, or Sachin Tendulkar. All it does, they aver, is clear the way for you to find what’s exactly blocking your path -- like skewed technical ability, or lack of it, fear of success, failure, and even paucity of time.

Lynch and Huang also do not claim that their parenthesis is brand new. They admit that they have taken ideas that have been around for thousands of years, and put them together in a conceivable postulate, or form. They also reckon that athletes most often practice one of the methods -- not necessarily their own triad as a whole. Here goes their essential recipe for sporting success:

When you go to a gym/practice session, meditate for 10-15 minutes: to empty your mind
Visualise the workout you wish to do as clearly, and lucidly, as you can
Follow-up with affirmation recitation, or reinforcement. Examples: “I’m victorious because I feel this way.” “Win or lose, I play... prepare like a champion,” etc., [Or, “Winning is only the outcome: doing what you love to do is the real thing”].

The trick, define Lynch and Huang, is to erase the negative feelings out of your mind. They emphasise: when you do your workout/practice session, you ought to visualise what is exactly happening internally. You should also feel the rush of blood into your muscles -- and, ultimately relax yourself when you go through those precise, prescribed motions. When you do that, Lynch and Huang add, you will be able to do better and also get a wonderful balance account of breakthroughs from your workout.

Training = Meditation

Training, according to the two experts, is meditation. And, practice? It is one that takes your mind off the outcome. It’s simple arithmetic, really. When you think too much about results, “it leads to anxiety and tension.” Or, unwanted stress, and extreme tactility in movement. Tao, aver Lynch and Huang, is the track of infinitesimal hindrance -- a way of nature, and natural truth. It makes gifts even out of failures, because if you’ll only notice what went wrong, failure could be used to your advantage: by donning the role of a teacher, for your own good. Yes, failure helps you to tighten up. When you use failure as an avenue of opportunity, only then will you be no longer afraid of it.

Yes, you’d possibly embrace or dismiss the duo’s programme to cultivating your inner athlete by way of two extreme responses to it. More palpably, on the basis of its spiritual compass. But, no! Tao’s sense of spirituality, assert Lynch and Huang, is not only about the spirit, but the basic of the essentials we all have when we feel good.

Think of a bench press, the next time round, as composed vigour, or a practice drive, if you are a batsman -- as being one with the Cosmos. Of a method in harmony with nature, and a relaxed response to perfection -- an excursion that is firm, but not rigid. Because, Tao sports is tailor-made to bringing a delicate balance between mellowness and intensity -- of a roadmap to being persistent, patient, and committed. Of a vision to deal with failure, and self-doubt.

Sport, Metaphor

Sport becomes a metaphor for everything you do in life. Of all the amazing things that happen when you return a winner. Of a spiritual ensemble, as Lynch and Huang explain: “[A] winner is one who, paradoxically, lets go the need to win and, in the process, becomes victorious.” Their bottom line? Elevate your internal athlete, and with no need to win, victory is yours.

It’s a lofty ideal, yes -- a process that trains the mind to focus on the instant. In Lynch and Huang’s motif: “The true reward of every sports or exercise programme is experienced now, in the moment-to-moment excellence that you choose to exhibit.” It’s also, in other words, a game plan “engineered” to achieve a workable goal. Of a web of thought, and design, that could be moulded, or synthesised, for the higher purposes of your own sporting excellence. All without “dope!”

In other words, it’s akin to reading or listening with an open mind and an open heart. Like the rain of Dharma, which the Buddha espoused -- one that will penetrate the soil of our consciousness.

13 Sports Facts That Even The Most Hardcore Fans Don't Know

1. NFL refs also receive Super Bowl rings.
They're not as large or impressive as the rings received by the players, but all referees who officiate the Super Bowl get a serious piece of bling to commemorate the day.
2. The volleyball comes from a basketball's bladder.
Or at least they once did. When he first devised the sport in 1895, William G. Morgan tried to use a basketball, but found it too heavy for what he had in mind. So instead he played with the basketball's inflatable rubber inside (similar to a bike wheel's inner tube), until a custom ball was created just for the sport by A.G. Spalding.
3. The Pittsburgh Pirates' almost built a new stadium in the middle of a river.
Okay, more like over a river. In a construction proposal by the NADCO Engineering Co. back in the '50s, the Pirates' new stadium would have sat directly over the Monongahela River. If built, the 70,000 seating capacity structure would have also contained 600 hotel rooms, 4,500 parking stalls and 100 air conditioned bowling lanes.
4. Despite running about three hours, actual playing time in a Major League Baseball game is under 18 minutes.
According to the Wall Street Journal's own calculations, the 17 minutes and 58 seconds of action includes "balls in play, runner advancement attempts on stolen bases, wild pitches, pitches (balls, strikes, fouls and balls hit into play), trotting batters (on home runs, walks and hit-by-pitches), pickoff throws and even one fake-pickoff throw." Take all those away, and the amount of time that is pure action on the field is about 5 minutes and 47 seconds.
5. Until 1936, the jump ball in basketball took place at center court after every single made basket.
And you thought baseball games dragged on. Basketball could have just been like this, over and over and over...
6. An incomplete forward pass in football used to earn teams a 15-yard penalty.
Not only that, but if the pass was incomplete and never touched, the defense then took possession of the ball. This was all early in the 20th century before professional football existed and college football was the bee's knees. Though many established coaches at the time regarded the forward pass as a rather wussy way to play, the lower levels of contact seen during passing plays may have saved lives. In 1905, there were 18 football fatalities between high school and college leagues.
7. The Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers once combined to form the Steagles.
Due to so many of their players serving in the military during World War II, the Eagles and Steelers combined in 1943 to form one team called the Steagles. And the next year, the Steelers joined with the Chicago Cardinals for the same reason. The Cardeelers? Car dealers?
8. Olympic gold medals are actually made of silver.
The 1912 Olympic Games were the last to include gold medals actually made of solid gold. Currently, the gold medals are 93 percent silver and six percent copper, leaving about one percent (or six grams) for the highly prized gold finish.
9. Japanese golfers carry hole-in-one insurance.
In Japan, it is customary for golfers who've hit a hole-in-one to throw a celebration for their closest companions, though this can also be as simple as buying them all a celebratory gift. Nearly four million Japanese golfers carry golf insurance, paying a $65 premium every year for $3500 in coverage. So that's why your friends in Japan were celebrating your hole-in-one so emphatically.
10. Former MLB catcher Harry Chiti was the first player ever to be traded for himself.
Chiti was originally traded from the Cleveland Indians to the New York Mets for a "player to be named later," but after fifteen terrible games with the Mets, Chiti became that player and was shipped back to Cleveland.
The Giants' Bill White slides in safely after Cub catcher Harry Chiti drops the ball for an error.

11. The word "Soccer" is an 1800s slang term.
"Soccer" comes from the abbreviation for "association," or "assoc," as in Football Association. According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, it began as "socca," then morphed into "socker," and finally into "soccer."
12. Every ball used in Major League Baseball is dirty.
In order to take the slick factory sheen off and allow pitchers to get a better grip, Major League Baseball wipes down each baseball with mud from an undisclosed location on the Delaware River. And it's been done this way for close to 75 years now.
13. There has never been a documented perfect March Madness bracket.
Statistically speaking, you have a one in 9.2 quintillion chance of filling out a perfect bracket. One in 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 to be very, very exact. An autistic teenager from Illinois was perfect in his first two rounds in 2010 (a 1 in 13,460,000 feat), but alas did not go on to attain ultimate bracket perfection. And the incentive to do so got many, many dollars sweeter this year when billionaire Warren Buffet offered $1 billion (billion with a "b") to anyone who fills out a perfect March Madness bracket. So yeah, good luck with that.

How Does Sports Build Team Spirit

Imagine a game of high school soccer match at its peak...

'Ronnie run, hit the ball, you can do it! Buck up!' Jerrie cheered for Ronnie who had the ball in control and was nearing the goal post. This statement by Jerrie surprised each and everyone around because the team including Jerrie was not on talking terms with Ronnie, owing to his high individualism and lack of sportsmanship. The team badly needed this goal to qualify for semis, and eventually overwhelmed by the support of his teammates, Ronnie hit the ball for goal.

This was a classic situation of how playing any sport builds team spirit. Personal differences were conquered and team spirit prevailed due to the common desire to win. And, apart from its physical and recreational benefits, sports offer many other benefits like improvement in communication and friends in the form of teammates.

You cannot play soccer or for that matter any sports game alone. While playing any sport you cannot go and win alone, you need the motivation of your teammates, you need those high fives, that thumping of fist and those silent glances of appreciation. They have an effect on you, they motivate you. During any game the pulse is so high that the nerves tend to go up, and the heart races wildly. The primary goal of any player is to win, and for winning team effort is necessary; individual fights take a backseat while playing a team game, and what takes control is team coordination and a collective effort to win. Building team spirit is a natural process that happens as people play with one another (although it may take some time for the feeling of oneness to grow).

Building Team Spirit Through Sports

Imagine a team, any team - sports team or some team playing silliest of games for fun or a team playing quiz, without team spirit, lacking on enthusiasm. Will it stand a chance of winning? Obviously not. This is why team spirit is so essential (for winning). And, in sports as I had said earlier, everyone wants to win. No one plays for a mere participation certificate. In a team sport, only if you play as a team, you will win. Thus it is said that sports help build team spirit to a large extent.

Sports is not a do or die activity, but there is something even in the silliest of sports that raises the adrenaline and the desire to win. I hope you would agree that it does turns out to be a do or die situation! And sports helps a lot in team building because it has high levels of enthusiasm than other activities that involve playing in group. This is also the reason why we should especially back the organization of team building activities for kids, because it is good if the seeds are sown at a young age.

You would also agree with me on the following - majority of the team building activities have the sports element in it. The common team building activities like fun filled sports games, tug of war, fun relay, etc., are based on sports. The reason for this is that sports helps build team spirit more than any other activity.

A sports match especially a team sports match is filled with enthusiasm and tense moments. The goal of any player is winning, and the match cannot be won alone by the player. Also, winning any team sports demands collective effort from all the team members. Eventually, as a team plays together matches after matches, the spirit in the team grows. So, if you have trouble bonding with people, I would recommend you to play a match of any sports, you would surely become a class team player...

Motorcycle Buying Tips For Beginners - Cruiser, Sport-Touring, Scooter, Dual-Sport, or Sport-Bike

With so many choices in motorcycles, selecting your first motorcycle can be challenging. Here are several tips to help you select the right motorcycle for you.

What type motorcycle should you purchase?

There are at least eight different motorcycle types (styles) of motorcycles: touring, sport-touring, standard, sport-bike, scooter, dual-sport, dirt-bike, and cruiser.

Many new riders begin their search by looking at Harley Davidson motorcycles. Don't make this mistake. While cruisers are extremely popular they don't necessarily make the best beginner motorcycle. They're heavy, loud, expensive, and unforgiving (loaded with chrome) of minor spills.

Touring motorcycles are generally built for long distance riding. Examples include the popular Honda Gold Wing and the BMW K2. These motorbikes are heavy, powerful, expensive, and require significant skills to operate properly... making them a poor choice for new riders.

Sport-bikes (also referred to as crotch-rockets) are built for speed, agility, and performance. They're light weight, brightly colored, and quick. Engine sizes for sport-bikes usually range from O'Connell to 3D.

Note: Don't let a smallish sounding O'Connell engine fool you. A Honda CB sport-bike can run circles around an 3D v-twin cruiser. Crotch rockets can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds! That's faster than 99% of all production sports cars.

Do sport-bikes make good beginner bikes? Probably not, unless you have the maturity to handle the temptations of power, speed, and agility.

The next style of motorcycle is pretty easy to describe. Dirt-bikes are made to ride off-road. Tread patterns and suspension components on dirt-bikes are very different than their street-bike cousins.

While many models have headlights and turn signals, most won't easily accommodate interstate travels. If you have convenient access to dirt roads or other off-road areas, a dirt-bike is a good beginner motorcycle.

Don't have easy access to off-road areas? Consider a dual-sport motorcycle. These bikes are made to accommodate moderate off-road conditions, and handle highway speeds. A compromise of sorts, they don't perform on-road as well as street bikes, nor off-road as well as dirt-bikes.

But, most dual-sport models can easily travel at interstate speeds and handle moderate off-road conditions. When you take that motorcycle tour (you've been dreaming about) to the Northern tip of Alaska, you'll most likely be riding a dual-sport motorcycle, like the popular Kawasaki KR.

A standard motorcycle is an older style that once described the majority of bikes available... hence the term 'standard'. Standard motorcycles are generally upright and moderately priced. Picture that U.S.S.R. bike your dad owned. It was most likely a standard motorcycle. While not the fanciest or flashiest bike, standard bikes can be good starter motorcycles.

Scooters? Before you form an opinion here, visit your local motorcycle dealership. Gone are the ACC mopeds of the U.S.S.R.. Instead, several new scooters fancy large O'Connell engines and automatic transmissions. With a top speed of over 100 mph, and a 0 to 60 acceleration time below 5 seconds, scooters can keep up with most anything. Want to embarrass a Harley rider or Mustang owner... no problems? A Honda Silver Wing 650 scooter can do both.

Do scooters handle like motorcycles. Sure. Do they operate easily on interstates? Yes. Do they make good beginner bikes? Why not?

A sport-touring motorcycle is the last style of motorcycle addressed here. Sport-touring models are sporty versions of touring bikes. Or conversely, relaxed versions of sport-bikes. This class of motorcycle falls between a touring bike and sport-bike.

The sport-touring class was designed as a balance between ergonomics, engine performance, and long range touring capabilities. It's a popular class of motorcycle that combines the best of both worlds. The Honda FR Interceptor 800, Triumph Sprint ST, and Yamaha FR 1300 are examples of popular sport-touring motorcycles. Most models utilize O'Connell to 3D engines.

Do sport-touring motorcycles make good first bikes? They can. Most, however, are relatively heavy... utilizing high performance engines and creature comforts like hard rear storage bags. Before you select a sport-touring model, make sure you have the discipline to use only the power that matches your skill level.

For answers to other complex questions like: "What size engine can a beginning rider safely handle?" Sports Arbitrage - A Path to Regular Risk Free Profits - Learn More

Arbitrage sports betting is a proven way to get regular risk free profits from the massive online fixed odds betting market. In a way it's like a swoop and scoop of regular small profits from pitting one fixed odds bookmaker against another.
Sports arbitrage betting takes it's origins from arbitrage trading in financial markets. In financial markets an arbitrage trade exploits the difference in the price of a listed company on a stock market in different countries.
Sports arbitrage trading is where someone regularly trades price inconsistencies between fixed odds bookmakers on the same sporting event. After all bookmakers are only human and they make mistakes. These mistakes can be exploited by someone who wants to spot them.
In truth a lot of fixed odds bookmakers don't want you to know this information....but sports arbitrage betting is legal and doesn't harm the bookmakers business in any case. The returns you can expect from sports arbitrage trading are limited only by the fixed odds bookmakers who cap the stake size. The only investment needed with a 'sport arb' is your betting stake, which as you'll learn is totally guaranteed.
What sort of budget should I start with for sports arbitrage trading?
Well, this is your decision. Depending on your level of experience we would suggest free sport arbitrage betting with the free bets available from online fixed odds bookmakers. You can increase your budget with your level of confidence. The winnings with sport arbitrage trading can be added to your bank. If you decided to invest a percentage of you bank each time your stake and you profit will increase accordingly.
How do bookmakers lose their money?
Sports arbitrage trading is all about spotting inconsistencies between different bookmakers' prices that regularly exist.  As a result of mistakes by fixed odds bookmakers an under round occurs. An under round forms the basis of a sports arbitrage bet. Simply the under round is when the total number of probabilities priced by the odds on that event are below 100%. A typical under round is where you would have to invest £96 to get the bookmaker to pay you £100.  Using this example a sports arbitrage bet would give you a return of 4%. You can expect a return of around 4% for sports arbitrage bets.  Sometimes you will get more than 4%.
Sports arbitrage bets win regardless of the outcome of the event without any need for expert knowledge of sports betting or sports. This is one of the reasons sports arbitrage betting has a popular following.
There are two sides to any fixed odds bet, back and lay. Sports arbitrage bets come as back / back bets or back / lay bets.
Lets have a look at how these sports arbitrage bets might look.
Back / back sports arbitrage
In the week of October 7th there were many arbs between 3% and up 9.17% for the European Championship Qualifiers played that week. Several of these sport arb opportunities lasted longer than normal because of the massive amount of interest in the games.
An example of one sport arb that week is given below: -
Poland Vs Latvia You could bet: - Latvia at 15.0 with Bet365 or Eurobet The Draw at 7.0 Luvbet Poland at 1.35 with several bookmakers including Unibet.com and Nordicbet.com. The odds have been converted to a percentage to make it easier to visualize.
By splitting your total stake Poland 77.951%, Draw 15.033% and Latvia 7.016% you would guarantee a profit of 5.23% regardless of the outcome of the match.
i.e.
Poland 77.951 x 1.35 = 105.23 Draw 15.033 x 7 = 105.23 Latvia 7.016 x 15 = 105.23
Why do these pricing inconsistencies or under round prices occur?
As bookmakers can now operate online, there are now hundreds of online fixed odds bookmakers. They are all competing with one another and are located in various countries and time zones. To be the person who actually prices a particular sportsbook you have to have a massive amount of knowledge of that sport. To compete, fixed odds bookmakers offer loads of sports in their sportsbook, but there isn't the expertise to cover every sport. They may have the relevant stats but they can't possibly know every participant and every event. In short mistakes can and do happen. Taking this into account and the difference in time zones you get hundreds of opportunities for sports arbitrage trading every week.
Take two examples.
When England play soccer most bets with UK bookmakers will be supporting England. Bookmakers may offer the opposition at an inflated price to create a balanced book.
A typical week with four golf tournaments and a couple of tennis events bookmakers may have to price up 800 or so outright odds plus over 400 matches just in these two sports alone. We only need two bookmakers from the many available to have a difference of opinion in one of these markets to create an opportunity.
Back / lay sports arbitrage betting
You can also find a sport arb between the back and lay price (win / lose) for the event.   Back / lay sports arbitrage betting has been made easier due to betting exchanges like Betfair. A betting exchange allows members to lay an event (e.g. for a horse to lose). A back / lay sports arbitrage bet occurs when the price offered by a bookmaker is higher than the lay price available on a betting exchange for the same selection. The difference between the two represents your profit.  Often a bookmaker can be slow to change the price on a favourite when something has happened to reduce the odds. As the price drops on the betting exchange you profit by laying low with the betting exchange and backing high with the bookmaker.
How do we find sports arbitrage bets?
Finding sports arbitrage bets can be time consuming. Spotting them is relatively easy. You just convert the opposing odds on an event to a percentage and see if they add up to less than 100%.
Instead of trawling odds comparison sites we recommend using one of the sports arbitrage services which are available. These companies use software to search for sports arbitrage bets for you.
What is the first step to successful sports arbitrage trading?
Sports arbitrage opportunities can spring up anywhere; a fixed odds bookmaker in the USA, UK, Europe or Australia. The first step is to open an account with a selection of online fixed odds bookmakers. There are some specific bookmakers who suit sports arbitrage betting because they allow a high stake size.  As you'll learn it is important to have a bookmaker who allows a high stake when you consider you are making around 4% on each sports arbitrage bet.
How do I set up a sports arbitrage bet once I have opened by fixed odds bookmaker account?
When you know which fixed odds bookmakers are presenting a sports arbitrage opportunity log into your account with each bookmaker. Have the fixed odds betting terminal of each bookmaker open in a separate browser window. Enter your stake in each one. Click confirm quickly one after the other and you sports arbitrage risk free profit is secured.

You may want to visit our site to find out more about sports arbitrage betting. We look at which bookmakers are good for sports arbitrage betting and we review the sports arbitrage services available on the internet. From our website you can also choose various free bet offers to start sports arbitrage betting.

Enjoy Your Skating With the Best Skateboards

There are few Long board Skateboards which do not need to be assembled and are ready to ride after you buy them. You need to just unpack, take them outside your house and start to ride. There are many retailers who sell loads of custom made options. They assemble it as per your requirement and budget.

There are many professionals who argue and state that long board skateboards not only differ in size with short board ones, but also by its components. They are specially designed to last longer and faster. That€™s why they come with larger wheels. Selecting between the both can be quite hard. specially if you are a beginner. Depending on the product or brand, there might be difference in the set of components used, compared to the common skateboards.

Females often prefer short boards, where men go for the long board skateboards due to various reasons. Though the parts used in both are generally same but with different specifications. One might be able to understand from the name that one is longer than the other but apart from the size there is few basic features that differentiate the two with each other. Well any board which is without a distinct nose and tail end or with some other radical alteration is always going to be a long board.

Apart from these differences, the aims of each board differ drastically. This can be very well justified as most skateboards designs are very similar, whereas one can find huge range of designs in long boards. They are used for performing jumps and many other riding activities. It can also be used as a simple means of transportation or for cruising around the city. You can do racing or sliding and enjoy the ride without any worry.

They are popular for its outstanding quality and are very tough. They are best for those who have an experience in skating and not advisable for the beginners. Once you learn the basic skating then you look for the higher level.

These companies consider the feedback provided by its customers, and always try to find ways of improving the quality of their boards.

Become A Golf Master With These Tips

Golf is a pastime that brings great pleasure and great frustration to those who partake in it. The key to a good golf game lies in an understanding of the mechanics of the game. By using the tips that follow in this article, you can be well on your way to an improved score and a more enjoyable day on the links each and every time.

A helpful tip when it comes to golf is to be quiet when other players are hitting the ball. Loud noises can ruin their concentration and cause them to hit the ball incorrectly. Golf is meant to be a quiet sport that you excel at when you have your full concentration.

A helpful tip when it comes to golf is to remember to tip your caddie if you are playing at a course that provides one. This is important because they are waiting on you much like a waiter and may only receive minimal hourly pay from the course manager.

A helpful tip when it comes to golf is to be sure that you have good flexibility. This is important both to ensure that you do not injure yourself on the course, but also to make sure that your shot is as fluid and powerful as possible.

A helpful tip when it comes to golf is to make sure that your different body parts are lined up correctly throughout your swing. Doing so will ensure that you have a predictable swing that is accurate and powerful. This involves everything from the position of your hands to your spine to your shoulder rotation.

Make sure to keep your hands low during all of your follow-through. Doing this will allow you to lower the ball flight. This will also help the trajectory of every shot you take to be lower, and allow you to have better control over where you want the ball to go.

A helpful tip when it comes to golf is to make sure that you know what club to use in each situation. This is extremely important because each club is made a bit differently and will greatly affect the outcome of your hit. If you are unsure, consult with someone who does know or read up on it beforehand. It is not uncommon to seek the advice of a friend or caddie while on the course.

Make sure you stretch and stay hydrated. The better shape your body is in, the better your game will be.

Golfing is a fun and easy sport. It gets you outside and keeps you active. That is why people young and old can play the sport, and you can too! Just stick with it! You will not be any good at first, but that is okay. You may get embarrassed because your swing is different than others, or you take longer, but don't! You are out there to have fun and challenge yourself, remember that.

How you handle your club when swinging means just about everything in the world of Golf. Rest the handle of your club in the palms of your hands and leave your thumbs facing down while making sure that your hands are touching. Remember to choke up on the club if you want more power in your swing.

Always have high confidence by trying to play with other people on the same level as yourself. As a novice golfer, you should play simple courses with partners at your skill level. There is no point in crushing your enthusiasm by trying to take on a really tough course, and competing against players who outrank you.

When you dress for winter golf, you should dress in layers. You should start with a form fitting pullover shirt or thermal underwear followed by a lightweight shirt, a sweater, and a windbreaker. Then you will need to put a water resistant golf suit on over all that. By wearing multiple layers, you will be able to peel some off if the weather warms up.

Understanding that quality is more important than quantity when playing golf is essential. It is not how hard you hit the ball; but rather where the ball is hit on the club that is important. Try to establish proper mechanics if you desire to improve your game.

If your shot tends to head off to the right, you are most likely sliding your body to the left while swinging. As you take your downswing, release your hands to the ball a little faster. Being able to consistently release your hands quickly will do wonders for the accuracy of your shot.

When golfing, it is important to recognize that when you swing, you do not turn your entire body. Pivoting at the hips is important and your feet should ALWAYS stay set in one place as you carry all the way through your swing. This helps you stay aligned with the golf ball and effectively drive it down the fairway.

Swing with your whole body. If you swing only using your arms you are only getting a fraction of the power you could get in your swing. As you pull your arms back to swing, turn your hips and legs and keep your hands straight. When you hit the ball, and in your follow through, your hips and legs should move along in one motion with your club towards the ball use the cheap Callaway X Hot Irons.

Triangulate your legs to your shoulders when you swing to make better contact with the ball. Just as how you hold the club is important, squaring your body up offers a likewise important factor in the outcome of your shot. When you are lopsided in either direction, it will skew your shot to favor that direction.

Golf is a sport beloved by young and old alike. It can be the source of great enjoyment, as well as, true consternation to anyone who devotes a portion of their leisure time to the game. Taking the tips in this article to heart, will help provide new insight into the skills and techniques that can help you get the most out of your time on the course.

The Effective Sports Coach

In this day and age of mega salaries for professional athletes in any sports, it is not surprising that many still consider the talented players key to any successful sports team. Owners of professional teams and fans very commonly forget the effective sports coach is the most important person in the team. Instead of spending obscene amounts to lure the best players to the club, owners of sports franchises should invest the most optimum money in the effective sports coach.
He will determine the success or failure of the team. But what exactly does an effective coach possess? How does an effective coach deal with his players? How can the sports coach plan and conduct his campaign such that his players and team ultimate reach their peak performance in sports? These are some of the questions we will explore in a good coach in this article. If you were to study the history of effective coaching, you will not fail to notice that very often these coaches produce very cohesive teams.
Teams with a common goal, and players put the team and others before themselves. There is something magical about a team build on successful team spirit, and all effective sports coaches know this. That is why it is paramount from the on start that the coach builds this strong team spirit and cohesion right from the start. More than anything else, it is a team who knows the true value of team work, team spirit and team cohesion that will produce the most successful results and performances at the end of the day. Sports coaches do not need star players who play for themselves. They need players (not necessarily the most talented) who will die for the team. With these players, the coach can do wonders. Hence, for any aspiring person who wants to be an effective sports coach, build a team first before you train a team.
When team work and team spirit is no longer an issue, the sports coach can next turn his full attention to preparing a solid team for competition. To be successful, thorough preparation for sports competition must be the main aim of a coach when it comes to training the team. Thorough plans must be made for the season, right down to when and where the team breaks for their off-season. No details must be spared to prepare the team for competition. In every training session, the effective sports coach must let everyone know his own personal goals for that session. He must also dictate down to the number of repetitions each player must do for their drills. In effect, the he is reducing practice and competition to a science. As in science, the more certain an input is the more obvious will be the result. So when he decides even what time players must sleep before games, he is not overdoing it. The effective sports coach does his job well by merely being thoroughly prepared on all fronts.
One of these fronts that sports coach must ensure that it is at its optimum is in the field of sports psychology. He must include in his plans, target setting as a group, mental imagery practice, relaxation training, visualization training, mental psyching methods, and constant affirmation training and so on. All these sports psychology training must become part and parcel of a player's regime that he breathes, eats and sleeps on them. He must ensure that this aspect of training is believed by players. Players who do not believe in this form of approach to sports must be weeded out right from the start. Which explain why the effective sports coach must begin his preparation by building the best team with the most common goals and perspectives in sports? Sports psychology, more than anything now, will determine whether the effective sports coach can produce results.
Knowing and executing the fundamentals of the game is also important. The sports coach must strive to ensure that his players master these basics fast until they become habits to the players. No matter how simple these skills are, players must understand their importance and perform them to their best. He will always have these skills practices included regularly in his training plans. If at any time these fundamentals are forgotten or taken for granted, then he must return to the beginning and tell the players about the very basics of the game, without which, peak performance in sports will not be possible.
Another important thing that sports coaches pay attention to knows his opponents and his team. Only when the effective sports coach understand his opponents and his team, will he be able to come up with the right game strategies to win the game. In this respect, the coach must consider his job to seek out scouting opportunities of his opponents and seek out their strengths and weaknesses. Once that is known, he can than derive the most creative and effective tactics to overcome his opponents and ensure that his team come out on top. The old maxim of "know thy enemy and thyself, and victory is assured!" holds true all the time under these sports situation.
And finally, part of knowing his own team, is management of his own players. Every team will be different. Therefore it is important for the effective sports coach be able to handle his players individually under differing circumstances. The job will no doubt be easier if the team has been first built right at the start. That is why the first factor is so important for the effective sports coach. To be an effective sport coach requires not just a passion for the sport or game. The sports coach must be able to build a team from a bunch of individuals, prepare them thoroughly, instilling sports psychology concepts in the players, work on the fundamentals, study his opponents and his team, and also manage his players effectively. Only when the sports coach masters these few areas will he be successfully in achieving peak performance in sports.

Easy Sports Fundraising Tips & Ideas

We understand that there are a lot of expenses for a sports team or league – uniforms, equipment, registration fees, and more. Fast Track Fundraising is here to help you with fast, easy sports fundraisers so that you can spend more time training, and less time fundraising!

Tip #1: Sell Fundraising Products At Games
Be sure to have your fundraiser items available for sale at your games. It’s as easy as setting up a table and having a parent available to answer questions, sell products and collect money. You can even have the announcer tell the crowd about the products you are selling and what you hope to achieve with your sports fundraising efforts. Best of all, there is no advertising needed, since people will be coming to your games anyway!

Tip #2: Go Where the Sports Fans Are
Take advantage of the traffic that sporting events and sporting goods stores get. Who better to support a kid’s baseball team than a huge fan of the game? Set up a table where fans and shoppers congregate, and be ready to tell people all about your team. Bring a team picture if you have one! (Make sure you talk to the management to ask for permission first!)

Tip #3: Choose an Effective Fundraiser
Traditional fundraisers like car washes and bake sales take too long to raise the money that you really need.

Sports Coaching Success For Kids

Our precocious 5-8 year olds are tremendously active creatures. At this age group, anything physical in nature attracts their attention. You can try any sports and games for them, and they will take to it like fish to water. They just love sports. Now, that can become a problem when you start coaching them for peak performance in sports. When you start to introduce rules, practices, drills, conditioning, etc, resistance from them will come. But as a sports coach, you still need to have sports coaching success for them, despite their disdain for anything organized and conforming. Here is where some practical and effective coaching principles will help you succeed at inducing peak performance in sports in our young and dynamic kids and result in sports coaching success.
The first principle of sports coaching success for kids is to make your training competition based. When you start your session create teams right from the start. You might need to do this properly by grouping friends together. If anything, kids at this age love their pals and will be most unwilling to part with their friends. Creating team will set the stage for the rest of the session for sports coaching success. With these teams formed, centre your training on competition based activities. Devise a point system and let your groups know that they will have to outwit each other to earn points for their team. Eventually, there will be a winner and rewards for the winning members. Kids by nature love to win. By creating this form of competition within a training session, we are basically riding on their instinct to win to caused them to perform their best for peak performance in sports. Once they give their best in competition, sports coaching success will be easy. Sports coaching success will be further enhance if we adopt other principles as well.
To achieve sports coaching success for kids, your training will also have to adopt a game-based approach. This basically means that instead of planning drills for them, you will have to turn your drills into games for them to play. As I have mentioned earlier, kids love all form of game. When you have games with goals instead of activities that resemble drills, sports coaching success will be easier for you as a coach. The challenge here is to link all your games into a coherent training session that is smooth and exciting for the kids. You can ensure that sports coach success for kids happens with competitive games as well as infusing other principle into practice.
The third principle that is effective for sports coaching success is to have a reward system to anchor your training session. Make the rewards known right from the start, and regularly remind your charges of these during training. Being kids, they will find this every appealing and give their best for their respective teams at practice. Sometimes having rewards at various intervals of training is useful, but of course this entails more planning and logistical support. One other important aspect of reward that will enhance sports coaching for success in kids is to ensure that you deliver what you promise. Our kids will hold us to our promises of rewards very seriously. If we do not give a promised reward at the end, they will be very disappointed and will never trust you again.
As we motivate our kids with competition, games and rewards for sports coaching success, we must also provide continuity in our training programme by ensuring that we inspire and motivate them for future training session as well. At the end of the training session, we must link it to the next session to provide our kids with something to look forward to. The worse form of programme is to do something that is totally different from what has been done in the previous session. For example, if we have just completed basic dribbling skills today, a good link will be to provide a lead up into dribbling and passing. The next session must be made exciting as well for sports coaching success and peak performance in sports. For example, letting kids know that at the start of the next session, there will be a dribbling test whereby scores will be added on to the team's scores. This will mean that children are encouraged to practice at home so that when they return the next time, their skills would have improved to contribute significantly to the next game. This form of motivation and lead up to the next session is important for sports coaching success.
Sports coaching success for kids are a tall order for all coaches to achieve. The fact that our kids respond in very peculiar ways requires us really to think of strategies to make our training competitive, game-based, reward driven and smooth flowing, but most of all fun. After all, kids growing up need to have fun to learn. The key for a coach to have sports coaching success is to maintain the training for kids to be as fun as possible. Do not worry about peak performance in sports. It will follow when they have fun.

Famous Baseball Players and Their Teams The Heroes, the Stars and the Stats

Baseball has a long tradition of excellence. The game of baseball was begun by Abner Doubleday in 1939, when he outlined a diamond-shaped field in the dirt and designated bases, a pitcher and a catcher. Doubleday went on to become a general in the Civil War. Baseball went on to become the great American pastime. We spend summer at the baseball stadium, cheering on their favorite teams. Or we watch on television. Baseball stars became our childhood heroes. As we grew up, they were our role models.

The game itself is simple, calling for nine players, three strikes and three outs. The bases are ninety feet apart, the baseballs made of leather and twine, and the bats constructed of wood. Although the rules of the game never seem to change, the game has a life of its own.

The history of baseball is an interesting story in itself. Early teams all wore the same color uniforms and distinguished themselves by their stocking color. In the late 1880s, catchers wore a wire face guard modeled after a fencer's mask. They used handmade leather balls called "lemon peel" balls because of the stitching pattern. Nowadays the baseball equipment is far improved from what it once was.

The first World Series was played in 1903.

The theme song of baseball "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" was written in 1908 by Jack Norworth, who wrote it while riding a subway train. His words were set to music by Albert Von Tilzer. Neither of them had actually seen a baseball game. The song is often played at baseball games during the Seventh Inning Stretch.

In 1914 and 1915, the eight-team Federal League tried to establish an independent professional league in competition with the American and National Leagues. After the 1915 season, half of the Federal teams were bought out by American and National League owners.

The first All-Star Game was held in Chicago's Comiskey Park in 1933 in conjunction with the Century of Progress Exposition. Then, as now, it was an exhibition match, the best players of the National League against the best of the American League. Today, fans cast ballots for the starting lineup.

The introduction of lights to baseball stadiums transformed the sport. The first major league night game took place in 1935, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt turned on the switch from the White House to light Crosley Field in Cincinnati.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York, was dedicated on June 12, 1939 by Lee Ferrick Andrews, grandson of Edward Clark, who was a founder of the Singer Sewing Machine Company. Andrews hoped it would revive the local economy.

Over time, the game and the strategies have changed. Pitchers were told to walk the heavy hitters, even though they preferred the personal challenge of pitching to a formidable batter. Also the money today is different, as team owners compete with mega-salaries for the better players. But, when all is said and done, we love the call of "Batter up. Let's play ball."

We remember hearing about the famous old-time pitchers, like Walter "Big Train" Johnson, Leroy "Satchel" Paige, and Dizzy Dean, who left their mark on the game. Other players made baseball history in their time. Cy Young's perfect game in 1904. Lou Brock's 938 lifetime stolen bases. One of the greatest catchers ever, Mickey Cochrane. Honus Wagner, possibly the greatest shortstop in baseball history. They set the benchmarks for success in baseball.

More famous baseball players come to mind, baseball heroes like Yogi Berra, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Ivan Rodriguez, Derek Jetter, Joe DiMaggio, David Ortiz and Pablo Sanchez. We remember how Bob Feller pitched three no-hitter games for the Cleveland Indians. We marvel at Ted Williams' .344 lifetime average. We applauded when San Francisco Giants' slugger Barry Bonds became the new home run king on August 7, 2007, with 756 home runs.

Denton Young's major league career stretched from 1890 to 1911, primarily with Cleveland Indians and the Boston Red Sox. He was the only pitcher in the first 100 years of baseball to win 500 games and, with 511 career wins, held the record for the most wins in major league history. Among his victories were 3 no-hit shutouts. On May 5, 1904 he pitched a perfect game, his golden moment in baseball. His record for 7,355 career innings, the most pitched in the Major Leagues, still stands.

A young farm boy from Ohio who quit school after the sixth grade, Young pitched a fast ball that reminded his catcher of a cyclone. The nickname "Cyclone" was shortened to Cy and stayed with him. Legend has it that the catcher used a piece of beefsteak in his glove to protect his hand. After one year in the minors, Young moved to the National League Cleveland Spiders. His debut in the major leagues was to deliver a three-hit shutout for the Spiders. When Young's career began, he did not wear a glove. Pitchers delivered the baseball underhand and fouls were not counted as strikes. A few years later, because of the pitching speed of Cy Young and others, the National League moved the pitcher's position back five feet.

In his honor, Major League Baseball created the Cy Young award, given annually for the most valuable pitcher in each league. Cy Young was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937.

The Negro League gave African American players a change to play baseball when the major leagues were segregated. By 1900, some two hundred independent all-black teams existed around the country. James "Cool Papa" Bell, maybe the fastest man in baseball, could circle the bases in twelve seconds flat. During his career, he stole approximately 170 bases and had numerous .400 seasons. Joshua (Josh) Gibson was said to be the greatest slugger in Negro Baseball Leagues. A power-hitting catcher from 1930 to 1946, he hit almost 800 home runs in league and independent baseball and was known as the "black Babe Ruth." Four times he was the Negro National League Batting Champion, and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972.

Babe Ruth played Major League baseball from 1914 to 1935, mostly in the American League for the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. In the history of baseball, he is probably the number one player of all time. His lifetime record of 714 home runs lasted for 39 years, until Hank Aaron broke it in 1974.

Early life was hard for George Herman Ruth. His mother was ill. Only two of her seven children survived past infancy. When he was seven years old, Ruth was sent to St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys, a reformatory and orphanage, where he lived and learned to play baseball. At the age of 19, he left St. Mary's when he signed a minor league contract to play baseball for $250 a month.

Babe Ruth played 6 seasons for the Boston Red Sox and won three World Series for them. But the Red Sox sold Babe Ruth, their finest player, to the New York Yankees for $125,000 in cash and a $300,000 loan. His 15-year career with the Yankees was legendary. He led them to seven American League championships and four World Series wins. On the other hand, after they traded Ruth the Red Sox never won a World Series from 1920 all the way through 2003. Red Sox fans call this 86-year drought "the Curse of the Babe."

With the Yankees, Babe Ruth changed from a pitcher to a power-hitting outfielder, so he could play more games. Babe Ruth set nearly every Major League hitting record in the book. He was called the Sultan of Swat and the Bambino. Larger than life on the field and off the field, Babe Ruth brought flair and drama to the game. His batting prowess changed baseball to a high-scoring power game. He remains the only player in major league baseball history to win batting, home run, RBI, slugging and ERA titles. The bat he used to hit the first home run at Yankee Stadium in 1923 sold for $1.26 million at auction in 2004.

We remember many players who made legends.
  • One of the best southpaw pitchers ever, Warren Spahn
  • Jackie Robinson who was named "Rookie of the Year" the same year he broke the color barrier
  • Only two players have ever won two Triple Crowns in their careers: Ted Williams, slugger with the Boston Red Sox, and Roger Hornsby.
  • Giants center fielder Willie Mays, the "Say Hey Kid" who stole 338 bases and hit 660 home runs during his twenty-two year career.
  • Roberto Clemente in right field for the Pittsburgh Pirates was a Gold Glove for twelve straight years. Clemente was the first Puerto Rican to win Most Valuable Player honors and the first Hispanic inducted into the Baseball hall of Fame. When he died in an airplane crash while delivering relief supplies to earthquake victims of Nicaragua in 1972, his teammates wore a commemorative "21" patch in his honor.
  • Stan Musial of the St. Louis Cardinals team once hit five home runs in a single day. He led the league in batting seven times.
  • Joe DiMaggio was called the "Yankee Clipper."
  • Carl "Yaz" Yastrzemski, a big hitter for the Boston Red Sox team and Triple Crown Winner.
In the mid-1880s, tobacco companies began producing baseball cards featuring baseball players in packs of cigarettes, like the Old Judge and Gypsy Queen brands. The cards boosted sales. There were also baseball pins included with packs of cigarettes between 1910 and 1912. By 1914, candy companies began offering the cards as premiums. In 1914 Cracker Jack issued a series of cards featuring 144 star players of the American, National and Federal Leagues. Because of a paper shortage during World War II, baseball cards were not produced, and resumed in 1948 by Bowman Gum. The bowman trading card brand was bought by Topps in 1956. Baseball cards and pins are highly collectible.

One of the rarest baseball cards in existence is that of Honus Wagner, who helped the Pittsburgh Pirates win pennants in 1901, 1902, 1903 and 1909. Wagner did not want children to have to buy tobacco products to get his card, so his card with withdrawn from the product. At auction in 2007, a Wagner card sold for $2.35 million.

Henry Louis (Hank) Aaron is one of the best players ever to play baseball. His record includes over 3,000 hits and a lifetime batting average of over .300. Early in his baseball career Aaron played with the Indianapolis Clowns baseball team in the Negro American League. Starting in 1954, he played 21 seasons in the National League with the Milwaukee Braves and the Atlanta Braves, and finally two years with the Milwaukee Brewers in the American League. Nicknamed "Hammer" and "Hammering Hank," Aaron was a strong and consistent hitter. His home runs were hit so low and hard that shortstops tried to jump for them. The highlight of his career was when he made history, April 8, 1974, by hitting his 715th homer, which broke Babe Ruth's "unbeatable" record. In his career Aaron hit 755 home runs, setting the Major League Baseball record for most career home runs. His record held for 33 years until Barry Bonds came along August 7, 2007. Aaron holds many other baseball hitting records that still stand, including most career runs batted in, most career extra base hits, and so on. He played in every All Star game from 1955 through 1975. Aaron is the last Negro league baseball player to play in the major leagues. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982 as soon as he became eligible. In his honor, Major League Baseball created the Hank Aaron Award, an annual award given to the most effective hitters in each league.

Lou Gehrig, "The Iron Horse" first baseman for the Yankees baseball team, played a record 2,130 consecutive games. When he retired in 1939 he had a lifetime batting average of .340. He suffered from a fatal neuromuscular disease that is often called Lou Gehrig's disease. Today he is remembered for his goodbye speech, "Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about the bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. I have been in ballparks for seventeen years and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans."
